Washing of hand-knitted items
How to wash and care for your knitwear from CamijoKnit
To keep your knitwear beautiful and durable for many years, it is important to wash and care for it correctly. Here is a guide on how to best take care of your knitwear – both with superwash and non-superwash treated wool.
Superwash vs. Non-Superwash – What is the difference?
- Superwash wool is treated so that it can be machine washed without felting. This makes it easier to maintain, but it also means that the fibers can be a bit smoother and less elastic.
- Non-superwash wool is untreated and retains the natural properties of wool, such as warmth, elasticity, and self-cleaning effect. It requires a bit more gentle washing, as it can felt and shrink more easily.
Washing your knitwear
Machine wash (for superwash wool)
If your wool is superwash treated, it can usually be machine washed. Follow these guidelines:
- Use a wool or hand wash program with a low temperature (max. 30°C).
- Choose a gentle spin (max. 800 revolutions/min).
- Use a mild wool detergent without enzymes and fabric softener.
Non-superwash wool – hand wash or machine wash?
Non-superwash wool is traditionally recommended for hand washing, but it can often be washed on a gentle wool program in the washing machine. This is often better than hand washing, as manual washing can lead to unnecessary stretching of the knit. However, this only applies if you trust your washing machine's wool program. CamijoKnit disclaims any responsibility for any damage caused by machine washing.
If you choose to hand wash, the following method is recommended:
- Fill a basin with lukewarm water (max. 30°C) and add a little wool detergent.
- Soak your knitwear for about 10-15 minutes – avoid rubbing or wringing it.
- Rinse gently with clean, lukewarm water.
- Gently press out the water (without wringing) and roll the knitwear in a towel to remove excess water.
Drying and storage
- Let the knitwear dry flat on a towel to maintain its shape. Avoid hanging it up, as it may lose its shape.
- Store your knitwear folded, not on a hanger, so it does not get stretched out.
- Avoid moths by storing knitwear in an airtight bag or with lavender/cedar in the drawer.
With the right care, your knitwear from CamijoKnit can stay beautiful for many years. Thank you for taking good care of it! 💛
